The Feast of the Redeemer is more than a summer event: it is the living memory of a collective vow, a deep bond between faith, history, and Venetian identity. Its origins date back to 1577, when Venice, devastated by a plague that killed over 50,000 people, made a solemn vow to the Lord: if the city were freed from the contagion, a church would be built in His honour and an annual thanksgiving mass would be held.

The plague ended, and the Republic kept its promise. Thus began the Feast of the Redeemer, still one of the most heartfelt events for Venetians, blending spirituality, art, and popular celebration into one unforgettable experience.

A basilica as a symbol of rebirth

To honour the vow, the Republic commissioned the construction of the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer on the island of Giudecca, entrusting the project to Andrea Palladio, one of the most renowned architects of the Renaissance. The church, with its majestic façade and white marble, still dominates the lagoon skyline, symbolising faith and resilience.

During the feast, a floating votive bridge connects Giudecca to the rest of Venice, allowing pilgrims and visitors to walk across the canal to the basilica.

A night of lights, wonder, and beauty

The religious celebration is only part of the Redentore. Over the centuries, the event has evolved into a joyful occasion. Venetian families decorate their boats, organise dinners along the banks or on the water, and gather to watch the spectacular fireworks over the St. Mark’s Basin.

The explosions light up the lagoon in a magical display of colours reflected in the water. It's a moment when Venice becomes an open-air theatre, filled with wonder and awe.
