21st November 2025 - Events

On November 21, Venice celebrates one of its most beloved and meaningful traditions: the Feast of Our Lady of Health. A centuries-old event that unites spirituality, history, and popular devotion, still drawing thousands of faithful and visitors to the lagoon each year.

The origin of the celebration

The feast dates back to 1630, during one of the most devastating plague epidemics in Venice. In their despair, the Venetians vowed to the Virgin Mary: if the plague ceased, they would build a church in her honor. Soon after, the plague ended, and the Republic of Venice kept its promise, commissioning architect Baldassare Longhena to design the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, whose majestic dome still dominates Punta della Dogana today.

The votive bridge pilgrimage

The most evocative moment of the celebration is the pilgrimage of the faithful crossing a votive bridge of boats built over the Grand Canal to reach the basilica, light a candle, and pray to the Madonna. This act of faith and gratitude has been repeated for nearly four centuries and remains the true heart of the feast.

A living tradition

The celebration is not only religious but also deeply woven into everyday Venetian life. Around the basilica and along nearby streets, stalls sell candles, sweets, and the famous “castradina”, a traditional smoked mutton stew enjoyed after visiting the church. For many locals, the feast is a cherished family moment that renews a shared sense of belonging.

For visitors, the Feast of Our Lady of Health offers a unique chance to experience Venice in an authentic and emotional way. The sight of the basilica illuminated by thousands of candles, and the city’s heartfelt, vibrant atmosphere make this day truly unforgettable.

More than a tourist event, this is a genuine expression of faith—a symbol of Venice’s resilience and gratitude through the centuries. Anyone lucky enough to be in Venice on November 21 will witness one of the most touching and authentic experiences the lagoon has to offer.
